This toolkit covers two tracks. Track one applies when a host required you to do a banned chore during a booking made on or after November 20, 2026. Track two applies when a host charged you a fine or an extra cleaning charge connected to checkout chores. Both tracks start in the same place: save the evidence first, then send the letter that matches your track.

Build the evidence packet

Assemble these items before you contact support. Each item answers a question the support agent will otherwise have to ask you.

  • Booking confirmation showing the booking date. This screenshot proves the reservation falls under the rules for bookings made on or after November 20, 2026.
  • Screenshot of the listing checkout section. This shows what the listing asked for in the designated disclosure area at the time you booked.
  • Screenshots of the host messages. These capture the exact chore request and the date it arrived, including any request sent after booking.
  • Photos of signs inside the home. These document checkout instructions that appeared on a card, a whiteboard, or a printed sheet during the stay.
  • Records of any charge or threat. These cover a fine, an extra cleaning charge, or a message linking a charge to an unfinished chore, and they support the second letter in this toolkit.

Letter 1: the host required a banned chore

Send this letter through the Airbnb support flow for your reservation. Attach the evidence packet with the message.

Dear Airbnb Support Team,

My name is [Guest full name]. I am writing about reservation [Reservation code] at [Listing name or address], booked on [Booking date] for a stay from [Check-in date] to [Checkout date].

During this reservation, the host required me to [banned chore requested by the host]. The request reached me by [message in the Airbnb app, sign in the home, or in person] on [Date the request arrived]. This booking was made on or after November 20, 2026. Under the current house rules and requests policy, hosts may not require guests to strip beds, wash and put away dishes, start laundry, or take trash offsite. I have attached screenshots and photos that show the request, the listing checkout section, and the booking date.

Please confirm that this requirement is not enforceable for my reservation, and please record this report in the case file for the host account. Please also let me know what follow-up steps you recommend.

Thank you for your help.

Letter 2: you were charged a fine or extra cleaning charge

Send this letter when money has already moved, or when a charge is pending on the reservation. Attach the charge record with the message.

Dear Airbnb Support Team,

My name is [Guest full name]. I am writing about reservation [Reservation code] at [Listing name or address], booked on [Booking date] for a stay from [Check-in date] to [Checkout date].

On [Charge date], the host charged me [Charge amount], described as [Charge description shown in the app or receipt]. The charge followed my decision to decline [banned chore requested by the host]. Airbnb policy does not allow hosts to impose fines or other penalties on guests, and AirCover provides the route for genuine damage claims. My booking was made on or after November 20, 2026. I have attached the charge record, the host messages about the chore, the listing checkout section, and my booking confirmation.

Please reverse this charge and confirm the outcome in this support thread. Please also advise whether any part of the claim belongs on the AirCover track.

Thank you for your help.

The dispute timeline

Work through the steps in order. Airbnb has not published a standard handling time for reports under this policy, so the timing here is unverified. The list below describes a sensible order of operations. It is an action sequence, and it carries no promise about how fast any step will be answered.

  1. Day 0: save evidence and reply in the Airbnb thread
Build the evidence packet first. Reply to the host inside the Airbnb message thread with a short factual message that names the chore and your booking date.
  2. Day 0: report inside the listing
Open the listing and use the in-listing report option to flag the checkout request. Reference the same chore and the same booking date you used in your message to the host.
  3. Day 0–1: contact support with the evidence packet
Send the letter that matches your track through the support flow for the reservation. Attach the full packet in the first message so the agent starts with the complete record.
  4. After the stay: review factually and follow up the ticket
Write your review in factual terms that describe the request and the dates involved. Return to the support thread and ask for the current status of the case.
  5. If charged: open a payment dispute
If a fine or extra charge reaches your payment method and support has not resolved it, contact your card issuer or payment provider with the charge record and your support thread. Keep the Airbnb case open while the payment dispute runs.

What can actually happen

Airbnb describes the outcomes for a non-compliant listing with "could include" wording, and the company has published no outcome data for individual reports as of October 2026. A well-documented report gives support a clear record to act on, and results vary by case. The full enforcement ladder, with the official wording for each step, is set out in what happens to non-compliant listings after November 20.

After the dispute: the review

Keep the review separate from the money. When you are ready to write it, the factual review generator turns the same ticked facts into a measured review and lists the lines that get reviews removed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need evidence before I contact Airbnb support?

Yes. Support works from screenshots and photos, and the evidence packet on this page takes a few minutes to assemble while the messages and signs are still in front of you. A report filed with dates and images is easier for an agent to act on.

Can I use both letters for the same stay?

Yes. Send the first letter for the chore requirement and the second letter for the charge, and reference the same reservation code in both. Keep both threads open until support closes them.

How long will Airbnb take to resolve my case?

Airbnb has not published a standard handling time for reports under this policy, and there is no verified data as of October 2026 on typical resolution times. Keep your own copies of everything so the case does not depend on a response arriving by a particular date.

The host says the charge covers damage. Does the second letter still apply?

Damage claims belong on the AirCover track, where the host provides evidence of damage. A charge imposed because you skipped a chore is a penalty, and host-set penalties fall under the fines ban. In your reply, ask the host to state which of the two the charge is, and send the answer to support with your packet.
